European Golf Croquet Club League Results – Novo Sancti Petri Heat

Novo Sancti Petri, near Cadiz Spain, were the hosts of the first heat of the 2024 European Club League season and provided quick lawns despite some heavy rain. Last year's runners-up, Roehampton, just managed to run out winners and qualify for the Grand Final in Madrid in October. Having won their opening two matches against Algarve and Bromley they were held to a 5-5 draw by Novo Sancti Petri in the final round. However, the hosts had earlier dropped a further point, drawing with Algarve. Newcomers Bromley acquitted themselves admirably and were only a golden hoop away from securing a draw against Novo Sancti Petri. Dusan Turcer (Algarve) won all six of his singles games.

1st Roehampton (ENG) 2 wins, 1 draw 5 points
2nd Novo Sancti Petri (SPA) 1 win, 2 draws 4 points
3rd Algarve (POR) 1 win, 1 draw 3 points
4th Bromley (ENG) 0 wins 0 points

European Golf Croquet Club League Results – IKSKILE Heat 8/9 July

60 games were played, among them 48 singles. After the first two matches all teams were tied at one match won out of two. On the second day, the play continued with further narrow margins.

Ikskile Club defeated Hamburg by 6-4, and secured not only a place at the Grand Final, but also the overall top position. Ealing beat Tolkis by 7-3, and thus earned the other ticket to Roehampton.

Overall, the top team has won just two games more than the last team – a clear indication of the closeness of the playing level of all teams.

Ealing Club presented an elegant table-top flag with national flags of all four clubs.

On Saturday night, there was an enjoyable barbecue party at the club for all players and accompanying persons. After the meal and a few drinks, the players went out to the lawns again to play some friendly matches that lasted until dusk at around 11pm.

Dawson Balls Mark 3 – Primary Colours now WCF approved *Update April 2024*

April 2024 update
Paul has been testing various ways of differentiating the new balls from the old ones. His long term plan will be make new moulds, but this will take time. Therefore, in the interim, the new balls will have a black circle marked inside the Dawson 2000 lettering. This black circle is drawn into the indented circle and so should last some time. Clubs are advised to monitor the marking and re-do it as necessary.
The secondary colours are currently in England being tested.
December 2023
The WCF have now approved the new Mark 3 Dawson balls Primary colours. We hope to receive secondaries for testing very soon.

Paul Manwaring advises that he is now back in production and will be able to meet orders for Primary Colours very soon. His plan is to sell to Australian Clubs from 15 January 2024 onwards and international orders from 15 February 2024.

The WCF wish to thank Paul for his perseverance trying new 'recipes' following one of the key chemicals being banned. Well done for getting this across the line.

An update from Macey White at the Chesapeake Bay Croquet Club

Croquet Friends,

Here at the Chesapeake Bay Croquet Club we are busy getting ready for the 2024 GC World Championship and Qualifier in October.

We have also been busy answering questions.  So, I thought it would be best to share our answers with everyone.  The official answers come from the WCF and the USCA and here is what we have learned:

WHEN ARE THEY?
The Qualifier is scheduled for October 13-16. The World Championship is scheduled for October 18 -26.  Chesapeake Bay is holding a warm-up tournament, the Big Oyster GC Tournament, on October 14-16.

HOW DO I ENTER THE WORLDS?
There are three ways to get into the World Championship.

    1. Be offered a WCF Ranking or Wild Card spot. There are 39 of these spots and they have already been selected.  You can find a list on the WCF website here: 2024 GCWC - Ranking Places and Wild Card Places - World Croquet Federation
    2. You can be selected to play by your country. Each country sets its own deadlines, so if interested, get in touch with your local contact as soon as possible.
    3. Enter and win a spot by playing in the Qualifier (top 4 (or more) will make it in).   WCF World GC Championship Qualifier Tournament - Chesapeake Bay CC Hartfield, VA - Events - United States Croquet Association (croquetamerica.com)

HOW DO I ENTER THE QUALIFIER?
You can register for the Qualifier by clicking on the Qualifier in the USCA Calendar, by contacting the USCA office at tournament@uscroquet.com or by following this link: 2024 GC World Championship - Qualifier Entry

Qualifier Allocation Date: July 14. All entries received as of this date will be sorted in order of World Ranking DGrade (as published at the end of this date [GMT]). Note that the Qualifier Ranking List does not have a minimum games or current ranking requirement.

If the tournament is over-subscribed on this date, entries will be accepted in Ranking List order and the remaining entries will be added to the Qualifier Reserve List. If a space later becomes available, it will be filled by highest-ranked player on the Reserve List as of the date the space became available.

BIG OYSTER
If you end up on the Qualifier reserve list, you can sign up for the Chesapeake Bay Big Oyster.  It runs from Oct 14-16.  If after signing up for the Big Oyster, you get a spot in the Qualifier, your registration fees for the Big Oyster will be refunded.

WHAT IS THE BIG OYSTER?
The Big Oyster is designed to be a high quality GC tournament that runs at the same time as the Qualifier, Oct 14-16.  Chesapeake Bay has 24 courts so there will be no interference between the two events going on at the same time.  We expect that many of the players selected for the Worlds will use the Big Oyster as a warm-up.

The allocation date for the Big Oyster will be August 1.  All players already accepted for the World Championship will be accepted to the Big Oyster if they apply by Aug 1.  Next on the allocation list are traveling companions of world championship players.  We expect that we can accomodate all world championship players and all traveling companions.  Remaining spots will be filled with the highest Dgraded players who have applied by August 1.

For more information or an entry form to the Big Oyster, please email maceywhite@gmail.com .

WCF 2024-2027 Business Plan

Key Objectives

Organisation

To provide an effective infrastructure to manage the sport globally.

To investigate amending our non-incorporated status and liability.

World Championships

To continue to organise successful World Championships which are well supported by the top players.

To monitor the World Championship portfolio of singles and team events and to ensure it continues to meet the needs of its various stakeholders (players, Members and host)

Membership

To increase the number of WCF members and RCOs in under-represented areas of the world. To target a 15% increase by the end of the plan period (this equates to circa 5 new Members).

To facilitate the upward progression of RCOs to Associate Membership and Associate Members to Full Membership.

To continue to work with our Members and RCOs to provide developmental assistance as needed.

Regional Committees

To support the ERC as it continues to develop the growth of croquet in Europe.

To provide support as needed for the successful administration and organisation of ERC events.

To ensure the ERC is financially viable.

Publicity and Promotion of Croquet

To continue to improve the website and our social media presence.

To improve communication with Members by the MC and between Members in the WCF Council.

Specific ideas to be investigated further include:

    • How to efficiently advertise croquet competitions between members, specifically those open to overseas players (to facilitate cross Member travel and play).
    • Promotion of the sport through live streaming, YouTube and other audiovisual material and outlets.
    • Set up of WhatsApp communication groups between Members for the broader discussion of items.

    • Sponsorship:
      • To investigate and understand the key drivers behind previous hosts successful attraction of sponsors and share this as recommended best practice.

    • To produce a feasibility study to investigate the viability of obtaining sponsorship for the WCF as an entity, the income to be used to fund a variety of projects, including improving the website, extending our social media footprint and supporting live streaming activities (but see also longer-term objectives below: Multi-sport Events).

Supporting our Sport

On-going activities:

To continue to maintain World Ranking Systems (MC).

To continue to manage the Laws of Association Croquet and the Rules of Golf Croquet.

To continue to review and improve our Statutes, Regulations and Policies as needed to ensure they are up to date and fit for purpose.

To continue to manage equipment testing and the associated regulations. To support manufacturers as required to ensure that essential equipment remains available and affordable.

New or in-progress initiatives:

To assist Members to increase the number of players playing croquet, both GC and AC. For AC specifically, to assist Members to understand the key drivers behind the decline in AC and to support initiatives that assist with its regeneration and growth.

To put in place a Disaster Recovery Plan, ensuring our key systems are protected, such as the Rankings and Croquet Scores.

To increase the number of referees and coaches, particularly amongst smaller Member with WCF financial aid if needed.

To provide video and online resources for the training of referees and coaches for GC and AC.

To facilitate and standardise the use of video refereeing by continuing the current trials and producing best practice guidance. To ensure the regulations, Laws and Rules are updated as needed.

To consolidate the implementation and use of global handicapping systems for both AC and GC.

To facilitate the sharing of Member best practice, particularly on such subjects as:

    • Increasing the number of young people, including children, playing the sport.
    • Encouraging the recruitment and retention of volunteer resources, essential for the effective administration of our sport.
    • Facilities and equipment innovations.
    • Successful recruitment techniques: what works across all age groups and demographics.
    • Introduction of croquet to those with disabilities (or other minority groups).

Longer Term Objectives

Multi-Sport Events

The growth of croquet would benefit from entry into multi-sport events such as the World Games, Masters Games, Commonwealth Games or of course the Olympics.

A first step to gaining entry into one or more of these events is to be recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) or one of its various sub-organisations, such as ARISF (Association of IOC Recognised International Sport Federations). This requires the WCF to be recognised by WADA (World Anti-Doping Association).

We propose preparing a Feasibility study to research the potential benefits and to set out a pathway toward attaining this goal, and in particular, whether this matter should be reconsidered in association with efforts to obtain a global sponsor who would cover the associated costs.

2024 European AC Championship – Final Places announced

The 2024 European Association Croquet Championship will be held between 15-18 August 2024 at the Carrickmines Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin, Ireland.

The Closing Date for Membership Places was 16th April 2024.

Out of the 17 Member Places originally requested, 5 were not used by the Members. This released these places to the Replacement Ranking List. One went to Switzerland and one to Austria. After this there were no more players in the Replacement Ranking list from countries that had not reached the ERC country maximum limit of 3 players. The remaining 3 places were therefore allocated to the top 3 players of the RRL, two English and one Irish. The ranking data used was at end 16th April 2024.

If a withdrawal occurs, the list will be re-run with ranking data as at the end of the day that the withdrawal is notified to the ERC.

Entry fee Payment – due by May 16th
Concerning the entry fees (£68 per player), these should be paid by May 16th 2024. Payments direct to the WCF Bank account are always preferred, if at all possible. Our bank details have been emailed to Members and should be forwarded to players. If a direct bank transfer is not possible, then you can use PayPal to pay by credit or debit card via the WCF web site using the following link: ERC - How to Pay your Entry fees

The process is hopefully self-explanatory. You do not need to be a member of PayPal in order to use this option.

Player Information – due by 16th May
The players should also send their player information. As well as contact information required by the Event Management team, a short player bio and a good photograph is required for use by the Irish in their event publicity and website.

Please complete this online Google form:  Player Information Google Form - ERC AC Championship, also due by 16th May.

Note: If you have any trouble uploading the photo (which does effect some people), please email it to me instead and I will pass it on.

2025 Under 21 GC World Championship – Winner: Levi Franks (NZL)

Tournament Report

Congratulations to new Under 21 World Champion, Levi Franks from New Zealand.

The tournament started with four blocks of seven, with 16 players qualifying for the knockout stage. The blocks largely went with the seeding, with only one or two minor upsets. The first two rounds of the Knockout went with the seeding, but the semi-finals saw an upset with Jack Good, the no.1 ranked player, unable to triump over an on form Levi Franks. Meanwhile in the other semi, many might have thought that Blake Fields, fresh from winning both the GC World Championship last October and part of the winning USCA Openshaw Shield team, would win over Fawzy Helmy, even though Fawzy was the second seed, but Fawzy was too strong and made it through to the final for the second time.

Both players started the final having already had some outstanding wins. With both of them on form, we expected good play and it was delivered. Levi took game one fairly easily with a 7:2 win, and quickly continued to take the second game 7:5. Fawzy showed his mettle and game three was close, 5 all and then 6 all, so it was all on the golden hoop. Levi took advantage of the first approach to 13 and when Fawzy failed the long clearances, Levi was able to run the final hoop to win the Championship.

This event had a huge range of standards but also ages. Worth noting was the superb performance by eleven-year-old Simon Dentchev from USA, who made it through the blocks and into the knockout, possibly the youngest ever in a WCF World Championship. Simon put up a good fight against no.1 seed Jack Good in the first round of the knockout, and then made it to the semi-final of the Bowl before narrowly losing to Jana Mohamed Saaid, from Egypt who went on to beat Jessica Bullen from New Zealand in the final of the Bowl.

The Shield, which is contested by those who lose in the last 8 of the knockout, was won by Sam Cuthbert from England, who beat Ethan Gumbrell from Australia, in the final. This was a fantastic performance from Sam who is still recovering from injuries received whilst out in New Zealand for the last U21 championship two years ago.

The Plate was won by Ivo Bozevnieks of Latvia who beat American Luka Nettleton in the final.

Well done to everyone. We hope that more of these young players will go on to become World Champions, but more importantly, that they have formed friendships with other young players from around the World, that they can take forward with them for years to come.

The WCF would like to thank all the many volunteers. Our events cannot happen without you and will are truly appreciative. We’d also like to thank the sponsors, the Sarasota Club and the USCA hosts.

Of the 7th U21 GC World Championship so far, five have now been won by New Zealanders. The 2027 championship will be in Egypt (dates tbc). Will Egypt on their home turf be able to find another U21champion?
