March 2016 Newsletter

WCF March 2016 Newsletter

The newsletter provides a summary for WCF Members of what the Management Committee has been doing recently and what is on the agenda in the near future.  Your comments are always very welcome.  It is also made available to all on the WCF web-site and via the Nottingham list and other croquet bulletin boards.

Council debates and decisions

Topic 50: Consultation on Statutes 107.3 and 107.4 which deal with the operation of the WCF Golf Croquet Rules Committee.  This closed on 6 March 2016.  Responses were received from Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Scotland, South Africa and the USA.  The results have been sent to Members and, on the main issues, showed a consensus in favour of eight members (five appointed by Australia, Egypt, England, New Zealand and the USA, two elected by the other Full and Associate Members and a non-voting member appointed by the MC), each to serve a maximum of two terms of four years each and new editions of the GC Rules to be published no more frequently than once every four years.

Topic 51: The Italian Croquet Federation applied to change its status from Associate to Observer.  This closed on 20 March 2016 without objection from any other Member and so the change of status came into effect.

What has happened in March?

We received the very welcome news that the Scottish Croquet Association and the Balgreen Club had been successful in obtaining a £10,000 grant from the National Lottery and so were able to meet the condition for obtaining a £1,500 capital grant from the WCF.  Congratulations are due to all involved and we look forward to seeing how this project develops.

A range of small but useful amendments to the Event and Sports Regulations have been drafted and considered by the MC and will shortly be put before the Council.

The Statute review is now fully under way with the completion of a first draft of Version 12 which is with the MC for review and comment.  Once finalised, it will be sent to Members for formal consultation.  The operation of the WCF has evolved over the years and the current version 11.6 needs revision, notably in relation to the provisions relating to general meetings that are no longer relevant since the Council agreed to make all decisions by email voting.

Bernard Neal dies at 93

The croquet world has lost one of its most venerable figures.  Bernard Neal passed away on 26 March 2016 juust short of his 94th birthday.  He had been unwell for some time and had been admitted to hospital after a series of falls at home in Cheltenham.

Croquet owes a considerable debt of gratitude to Bernard as a top-class player, a very capable administrator and an invaluable link between the Croquet Association and the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club where he served as a committee member and Vice President for many years.  It was through Bernard’s good offices that the AELTCC presented the Wimbledon Cup in 1989 to be the trophy for the Association Croquet World Championship.

Bernard came to croquet via lawn tennis and Wimbledon after a full-sized croquet court was installed in 1957.  He joined the Croquet Association in 1960 and soon rose to the top of the game.  He represented Great Britain in the MacRobertson Shield in 1969, 1974 and 1979.  He was soon elected to Council which benefitted over many years from his sound judgement and wise advice.  He became Chairman of Council in 1972 and proceeded to set a record that is unlikely ever to be beaten, namely winning the Open Championship in both years of his chairmanship!  His other unique claim to sporting fame is as the winner of the greatest number of Wimbledon titles, namely 37 times the winner of the Wimbledon Croquet Championship.  This far surpasses the haul of any tennis player.

Bernard enjoyed good health into his nineties and it was a very fitting tribute to him when he was elected President of the Croquet Association in 2004 in succession to John Solomon.

Above all, he was a gentleman, the most sporting of opponents and a very good and generous friend to very many croquet players in England and across the croquet world.  He will be greatly missed and our thoughts and condolences go to Liz, Mike and Cathy on the loss of their husband and father.

The Ramsis Cup

History

The Ramsis Cup was donated by the World Croquet Federation in 2008 to be the trophy awarded to the winners of a Golf Croquet Test Match between teams of six representing Egypt and the Rest of the World.  The first Ramsis Cup Test Match was held at the Roehampton Club in London on 8 and 9 August 2008.  The format was the same as that used in the MacRobertson Shield, namely nine doubles matches and twelve singles matches.

In August 2008, every one of the eight GC World Championships from 1996 to 2008 had been won by an Egyptian, including the most recent earlier in that year in South Africa where Ahmed Nasr had defeated Reg Bamford (SAF) in the final.  The Egyptian team was formidable, headed by Ahmed Nasr (world champion in 2004 and 2008), Mohamed Nasr (world champion in 2006) and Khaled Younis (world champion in 1996, 1998 and 2002) together with Helmi Abdelgayed, Ahmed El Mahdi and Yasser Esmat.

The Rest of the World team was the strongest that could be found, consting of four UK-based players, namely Reg Bamford, Rutger Beijderwellen, Robert Fulford and Stephen Mulliner and two flown in from New Zealand and the USA, Chris Clarke and Sherif Abdelwahab.

Somewhat unexpectedly, and possibly aided by some wet weather on the Sunday, the Rest of the World team put on a superb performance and emerged the winners by the narrow margin 11-10.  Reg Bamford had the satisfaction of securing the winning point with a straight games defeat of Ahmed Nasr and thereby gaining some revenge for his defeat earlier in the year in the world championship final.

The 2016 Test Match

Eight years have since elapsed and the WCF was delighted to respond positively to a request from the Egyptian Croquet Federation that a Ramsis Cup Test Match might be held immediately before the GC World Team Championship in May 2016.  The WCF is most grateful to the Croquet Association for agreeing to act as national host and to the Hurlingham Club for providing the lawns.  The event will be held on Friday 13 May and Saturday 14 May and will follow the same format as in 2008.

The following teams have been selected by the Egyptian Croquet Federation and the WCF Management Committee.

Egypt Ahmed Nasr
Hamy Erian
Mohamed Karem
Mohamed Nasr
Mohamed Taha
Amr Baher
Rest of the World Reg Bamford
Robert Fulford
