23 year old Hamy Erian seemed to be storming in his usual calm fashion to a 3-0 victory in the GC World Championship final at Mount Maunganui on 15 February.  He took the first two games 7-4, 7-5 and Ahmed El Mahdi looked as if his shooting boots had been left at home after two days of glorious precision.  However, the 45 year old found renewed form with two 7-4 wins to make it 2-2.

Some now thought that being hauled back would depress Hamy's spirits but he quickly dispelled such fears by building a 3-1 lead with hoop 4 being made by Y on a rush-peel by R from the North boundary!  Two hoops later the lead was 5-1 and it looked as if Ahmed going to be as swiftly despatched in game 5 as he had despatched Reg Bamford in game 3 of their quarter-final.

However, hoop 7 became a huge duel which Ahmed finally won with a 5 yard hoop shot which stopped within 2 yards of hoop 8.  He not only won hoop 8 but did so after a split clearance that enabled him to send his other ball close to hoop 9 without being offside.  This allowed him to convert 5-3 to 5-4 and, after running hoop 9 yo near hoop 10,  5-5.

There was another intense duel at hoop 11 with vital clearances from both players.  The decisive moment came when, rather than clearing Y sitting near 11, Ahmed preferred to take on a 9 yard hoop shot.  Not only did he ran the hoop to lead 6-5 but the weight was such that it came to rest within 2 yards of 12.  It was the killer blow and, after two missed long clearances, Ahmed El Mahdi ran 12 smoothly from 2 yards to become the 2015 World Champion.  He had won six points in a row from 5-1 down.

Hamy Erian had done very little wrong during his opponent's extraordinary recovery and deserves huge credit for his outstanding performance during the whole event as well as in the final itself.

March 2015 Newsletter

WCF March 2015 Newsletter

The newsletter provides a summary for WCF Members of what the Management Committee has been doing recently and what is on the agenda in the near future. Your comments are always very welcome. It is also made available to all on the WCF web-site and via the Nottingham list and other croquet bulletin boards.

Council debates and decisions

The WCF Council is currently deliberating on two topics with a closing date of 12 April. Topic 42 is a recommendation from the MC that Palestine’s Observer Membership be terminated as, unfortunately, it seems that there has been no organised croquet activity there for some time. Topic 43 is a recommendation from the MC to adopt a policy confirming that Regulations applicable to a WCF Event should not be varied in relation to that Event during its lifecycle.

What has happened in March?

The player surveys from the three recent Golf Croquet World Championships have now been analysed. A total of 37 players replied (Women’s GCWC 10, U21 GCWC 5 and GCWC 22) and the MC is grateful to them all for expressing their views. A summary is available on the WCF websites.

Perhaps the most interesting results were in relation to questions asking for comments on the use of the Atkins Quadway hoops, the use of the Block Seniority Method for seeding the knock-out stage and about the GC wrong ball law, Rule 11. The use of Atkins hoops in the U21 GCWC and GCWC was supported by 17 players and opposed by six (four did not comment) and the Block Seniority Method was approved of by 28 players and disapproved of by nine. The wrong ball rule was supported by 23 players and disapproved of by 14.

The dates of the next Association Croquet World Championship in April 2016 were settled and are given below. An active discussion of how best to stage the Golf Croquet World Team Championship was required after Egypt suggested that March 2016 in Cairo would not be feasible. The MC is pleased to report that the (English) Croquet Association has agreed to host both Tier 1 and Tier 2 in May 2016.

Keith Aiton resigned from the MC and Samir Patel has been co-opted to fill the vacancy. Samir and three other MC members will retire on 31 December 2015 but will be eligible for re-election. Keith was first elected in 2007 and the MC is very grateful to him for his years of service to the WCF.

The new web-site has been delivered with a more interesting and marketing-focussed home page and simpler navigation. It is now active and can be found at http://www.worldcroquet.org.uk. The current and new web-sites will be run in parallel until the new site is fully populated with archive data. Suggestions regarding the layout and content will be welcome.

What is Golf Croquet?

What is Golf Croquet?

Golf Croquet (or "GC") is the simple form of croquet that forms the basis of many people's experience of the popular garden game.  There are no bonus shots - each side plays alternate strokes and each tries to be the first to score the next hoop.  This gives GC an interactive and social aspect that makes it a more accessible game than its more traditional cousin, Association Croquet (or "AC").

AC is based on break play (like snooker, billiards and pool) which can mean that one player can spend a lot of time sitting down, unable to do anything to influence or interrupt the striker's progress.

The opposing sides each have two balls: Blue and Black against Red and Yellow. Each side may be one or two people (i.e. singles or doubles). Each side plays alternately in rotation: blue, red, black, yellow, as shown by the sequence of colours from the top of the centre peg.

Each turn consists of one stroke only: no extra turn is gained by running a hoop or hitting another ball (contrary to Association Croquet). To start the game, toss a coin. The winner of the toss plays Blue and Black, and Blue always starts.

The opening strokes are played from within one yard of Corner IV (nearest hoop 4), and the players aim to run the hoops in order from 1 to 12. The winner is the first to reach 7 points. A deciding hoop (hoop 3 again) is run if the scores are equal after 12 hoops, making 13 in all.

To score a point, a ball must run completely through the hoop in the correct direction. A ball has run a hoop if you can slide a straight edge down the front of the hoop without touching the ball. It may run the hoop in more than one turn, or be knocked through by another ball. If a ball should go through two hoops in order in the same stroke, both points are scored.

The side that first gets a ball through Hoop 1 scores that point and then all balls go onto the next hoop in order (i.e. Hoop 2). All players always contest the same hoop.  A player may play towards the next hoop before the previous hoop is run. However the opponents may ask that any ball more than halfway towards the next hoop when the current hoop is actually run, is brought back to a penalty spot halfway down the east or west boundaries.

A ball that goes off the court is replaced on the boundary where it went off but may be temporarily moved if it interferes with the playing of another ball.

The striking of the ball in a turn must be a clean, single hit; there are a number of faults that a player may make when striking the ball. These are listed in the detailed rules. After a fault, all balls are replaced in their positions before the faulty stroke and the player loses that turn.

If a player plays a ball other than the one they should have played and it is noticed before the opponent plays, the balls are replaced were they were before the erroneous stoke and the same player then plays the correct ball.

There is an exception when a player plays their partner ball.  In this case, the other side can either have the balls replaced (as just explained) or can decide that the stroke should stand but the balls of the offending side are swapped.  The other side plays then plays the next stroke.  See the Wrong Ball rule (Rule 10) in the Rules for more details.

Handicap Play

To allow evenly contested games between players of different abilities the weaker player is given a number of extra strokes that can be taken at any stage of the game. However a hoop may not be scored for the player's side in an extra stroke.
